Flora and fauna have long been a natural source of sonic inspiration, and this program explores how a variety of composers have channelled this into their music.  From Vaughan Williams’ classic beauty Lark Ascending to our very own Donovan Seidle’s musical depiction of the chinook phenomenon so familiar to Albertans: join us and experience the unique musical landscape created by this collection of environmentally minded works.

Kensington Sinfonia is joined by the talented students of Amici String Program to explore folk music seen through a Classical lens. Antonín Dvořák incorporates Bohemian folk idioms into his String Serenade, Sir Ernest MacMillan honours French Canadian traditional music, and American Steven Snowden celebrates Appalachian folk songs.  Joyful music presented with the inspiring energy of the future stars of Calgary’s Classical scene, this concert is the perfect remedy for mid-Winter blues.

A Mother’s Day treat, the final concert of the main series will present music of dreams and fantasy, featuring the young winner of the KS Concerto Competition, to be announced in the Spring.  This program honours the creative expressions of female composers with pieces by Wu Man, Angela Morley, and Canadians Norma Beecroft and Sophie-Carmen Eckhardt-Gramatté. Celebrate the special day at a new venue for the ensemble: St. Stephen’s church in the Beltline!
